10 takeaways from Marketing for Medics Workshop

  1. You don’t need to become a viral content creator.
But if you’re building something outside your day job, the right people do need to be able to find you.

  2. Specific beats broad.
You may be able to help lots of people, but your marketing needs to be specific enough for someone to think: “Oh. That’s for me.” Hence my ridiculously specific £50 Marine Science PDF example.

  3. Choose a banana for now.
One group of people, with a problem you can help solve, in one way, for now. It’s a direction, not a tattoo.

  4. Your banana can evolve.
Mine is evolving too. Right now, I think I might help medics who know their working life isn’t quite working for them, so they can build a working life they don’t want to escape from.

  5. Action → Evidence → Confidence.
Don’t wait to feel completely confident before you do something. Take a small, imperfect step, see what happens and use that evidence to decide what comes next.

  6. The right advice at the wrong time is still the wrong advice for you.
You probably don’t need ads, another platform or a complicated funnel when you’re still working out who you want to help.

  7. Before you build the thing, talk to people.
Don’t disappear off to build a website, course or clinic before you know whether anybody actually wants it. Have some conversations first.

  8. Your business has to fit on your plate.
Time, money, people, place, energy and everything else going on in your actual life matter. You’re building something that fits your life, not something permanently in conflict with it.

  9. Who already knows the people you want to help?
Before automatically reaching for Instagram, look at the people, communities and organisations already connected to them. Have coffee. Make connections. Build relationships.

  10. You don’t need all the sprinkles.
Give yourself a Not Yet List. You do not need Instagram + LinkedIn + YouTube + a podcast + Substack + everything else. Choose what makes sense for you and the people you want to reach.
